Bowen Designs News

Bowen, producer of many Marvel Comics busts and statues, has added images of 3 new Marvel busts to their site. On the Behind the Scenes page, you can now see images of the painted Ka Zar and Zabu bust, the painted Thunderbird bust and what appears to be an unpainted bust of Spider Woman II aka Julia Carpenter. See the Bowen Behind the Scenes page for pics.

In related news, the Havok and Polaris mini busts are now showing as being sold out through Bowen’s site although they are still available through other retailers, including this one.

X3 DVD Error?

Some smart comic book movie consumers have noticed an error with the extras on the X-Men 3 DVD’s that hit store shelves yesterday. It has been reported in forums and confirmed by this X-Men movie site that some DVD’s are being found with 21 deleted scenes and some have only 10.

It looks like this is an error on Fox’s part. I’m betting that they were meant to have 10 only, and some production error caused them to be released with 21. In any case, it appears to be random.

If you want these now, you better get them because Fox could correct this in the next run. After that, you will have to wait for them to show up again with all the special features that will be released with the next version. Good luck finding them!

Civil War Delay Hurting Marvel?

As most of you probably are aware, Marvel Comics blockbuster event this year was Civil War. In August, I believe, Marvel announced that they would be delaying issue number 4 of Civil War until September ‘06 and because of this they were delaying all of the Civil War books because they all tie together event-wise.

Much grumbling was heard over this in the comics community and rightfully so. Fans would not be able to get the books they were anticipating. Retailers would not be getting the books to sell, so potentially they stood to lose money. This was a big deal.

Or was it? Diamond’s sales figures are out for August and which comic book publisher came out on top? Marvel. Yep, Marvel beat out DC by 1% in market share for the month of August, in spite of holding back all their Civil War related books.

The top 300 comics is a different story though. DC had the number one book with Justice League of America #1, and Marvel only held 4 of the top 10 positions. Although, Marvel still have positions 2, 3 and 4 with New Avengers, Wolverine: Origins and Astonishing X-Men.

Think DC’s pissed?

Marvel.com Debuts Message Boards!

I saw this announced yesterday, but didn’t actually get around to checking it out until now. Marvel announced that is again adding forums to their web site due to fans asking for it. There is a place to discuss everything Marvel, including movies, toys, video games and comics.

Just browsing the list of available forums, it looks very promising. I counted 31 different subject areas and all already have tons of topics and posts. Not bad! This looks like it may be a regular hang out for me. Here is a list of forums found there.

Punisher Special Edition DVD

Punsiher DVDComics Continuum just posted the facts on an upcoming special edition release of The Punisher on DVD. According to the post, the DVD is scheduled for release on Nov. 21. The disc will also feature 17 minutes of new footage.

In addition, there will be:

  • Animated Kuwait Deleted Scene
  • The Punisher Comic book Gallery
  • “Making of” featurette
  • All new Tim Bradstreet illustrations

The Kuwait scene, originally slated to open The Punisher, was never shot due to budget constraints. Although, when the DVD came out originally, it included a comic with a story that lead into the movie. I would guess that this animated intro will feature the story that was in the comic.

This should be a really good collectors item. I liked the movie and own the original DVD. I realize that they release new versions to increase their profits, but I hate it when they do this. I already own the movie and do not want to buy it again, but I would like to have the special features. Maybe I will rent it instead!

Spider-Man Origins Unveiled on Hasbro.com

Spider-manHasbro now has a web site for their new Spider-Man Origins line. To see it, go to http://www.hasbro.com/marvel/. There is not much there right now. They have pictures of the new Signature Series and battle packs. The coolest thing is the Origin of Origins video. Notice the banner that says “coming this fall.”

It looks like Hasbro will be heavily promoting this new line and packing the shelves with all kind of Spider-man product. They may even put Toy Biz to shame. Let’s hope they promote the new Marvel Legends and other lines as good as the Spider-man product.

X-Men 3 on DVD

x3Marvel announces on their site that X3 will be released on DVD October 3rd. Here is what they had to say about what extras will be included.

The single-disc DVD release includes: three alternate endings, each with optional commentary by director Brett Ratner; 10 deleted scenes; audio commentaries from Ratner, the writers and the producers; a preview of the upcoming Ben Stiller movie A Night at the Museum; and two hidden “Easter eggs,” one of Beast reciting Shakespeare and the other of the X-Jet landing in Washington.

According to Marvel, there will also be a collector’s edition with an exclusive 100 page comic book with a new story by Stan Lee. In addition, all three X movies will be released together as a trilogy pack in the future.

With all the extras, this seems like a must have. I wonder since they are releasing this in October, what they will be releasing around Christmas time.

Ultimate Avengers 2 This Week!

Ultimate Avengers 2Ultimate Avengers 2 will be in stores on Tuesday. Target has it in their ad this week for $12.99, and it includes an extra disc with the Ultimates digital comic. Here is an excerpt from Marvel’s press release.

This August 8th, don’t miss the triumphant return of all your favorite Marvel Heroes — Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Giant-Man, Wasp, and Black Widow — in their second action-packed animated feature film! They are joined by the Black Panther as they try to find out what is behind the mysterious happenings that occur in his secluded African Kingdom. Only together can the Ultimate Avengers and Black Panther hope to save the country.

The DVD is packed with exciting extras such as a featurette on the original “The Ultimates” comic series, a gag reel, a “What Avenger Are You?” game, and a first look at two more upcoming animated feature films: Iron Man and Dr. Strange. Be sure to make yours Marvel with Ultimate Avengers 2 on August 8th

The extras on this one look really good. I really enjoyed the first Ultimate Avengers movie. I will be picking this one up on Tuesday.

Hasbro Marvel Toys in ToyFare #109

ToyFare Magazine #109ToyFare #109, which hit newsstands on Wednesday, has detailed information and photos on new Marvel products planned for 2007. I reported previously this week on Hasbro Marvel Legends here, but I wanted to cover all of the Marvel product Hasbro has planned for next year. Here is a detailed list.

Marvel Legends Annihilus wave - Release Date January 2007

  • Banshee
  • Planet Hulk
  • Hercules
  • Beast (movie)
  • Emma Frost
  • Ultimate Iron Man
  • Annihlius (build-a-figure)

Synopsis: Let’s hope these are early prototypes, and Hasbro has time to refine these before they go into production. Most of them are sculpted badly and painted worse. But have faith that Hasbro will realize they have big shoes to fill, and that they have already sent them back for improvements.

Ghost Rider - Release Date December 2006

  • 6 inch figures
  • die cast titanium figure
  • Deluxe 12 inch Ghost Rider with motorcycle

Synopsis: The first pictures of Ghost Rider figures look very good from what can be seen. If the finished version turns out this good, I may decide to pick up my first Ghost Rider figure.

Spider-Man Origins - Release Date January and February 2007

  • 6 inch figures
  • 2 waves of Spider-Man’s different costumes, including 2099 and “Iron Spidey”
  • 2 waves of villians, including some reissues and repaints like Demogoblin
  • 2 movie and 1 comic version battle pack 2 packs in November and December

Synopsis: 2007 will be a big year for Spidey with the next movie coming out, and Hasbro has plenty planned. We will probably see a lot of reuse in the initial Spider-Man Origins. But as long as we get a new 2099 and Iron Spidey, I’m in!

Spider-Man Origins: Signature Series - Release Date November 2006

  • Spider-Man
  • Doc Ock
  • Green Goblin
  • ???

Synopsis: I think these will be intersting as well. Think updated Mego figures. These will be 8 inch figures with cloth costumes consisting of Spider-Man and his greatest villians. I think these could end up doing well, especially if they expand the line beyond Spidey and Co.

Marvel Kids Lines - Release Date November 2006 and January 2007

  • Itsy-Bitsy Spider-man
  • Superhero Squad

Synopsis: Basically, Superhero Squad is Marvel versions of the Galactic Heroes line Hasbro does for Star Wars. They are 3 inch toddler sized figures of Marvel heroes. For Itsy-Bitsy Spider-man, think a rapping Elmo. If you buy it for your kid, you will probably be annoyed.

My Thoughts: It looks like Marvel’s future is in good hands, at least on paper. The pictures are a different story, for Marvel Legends anyway. Hasbro needs to improve on these designs. I hope they don’t release those figures we see in the magazine. They have a chance to knock it out of the park here or fail miserably. The other lines show a lot of promise surprisingly. Be on the lookout for previews coming out of the San Diego Comic Con soon. Until then you can pick up ToyFare #109 to hold you over.
