King Leonidas was in ‘Dracula 2000′ and ‘Tomb Raider 2?’

300.jpgEveryone agrees that Gerard Butler’s just gave a star making performance in ‘300.’ But where did he come from? While I was sitting there watching ‘300,’ I couldn’t help but feel that he looked very familiar. I also detected a Scottish accent, which I thought was funny, since he was playing a legendary Greek King.

So as soon as I got home I searched for his profile on IMDB.  It turns out I had seen him before… in ‘Tomb Raider 2.’ He also played Dracula in ‘Dracula 2000.’ Really?

Yep. It’s not really that surprising though. Everybody knows, “you have to do a lot of crap before they put you in anything good.” And, while he was phenomenal as Leonidas, I actually liked him in ‘Tomb Raider’ as well. I don’t think ‘Tomb Raider’ did well at the box office, but I liked it. And I liked his character a lot in that movie. And for him at that time, starring opposite Angelina Jolie was probably a freaking big deal.

Anyway, I don’t think he will have any problem landing roles now. He just needs to worry about choosing the right roles. ‘Tomb Raider 3′ anyone? Not likely… his character was killed at the end of the last one.

You fail to also mention his starring and title role in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Phantom of the Opera. Yep, that was him. And he did the singing too. And he was Creedy in Reign of Fire, and a terrific Marek in Timeline. He may have been in many forgettable films (Phantom of the Opera not withstanding), but he was always memorable in them. He is a very charismatic and gifted actor. True star quality.

…And The Stranger in “Dear Frankie”, Jonnie Donne in “The Jury”, and in his break-out role, Attila in “Attila.
Gerry chooses roles that suit him, not ones for the PR value.
I’m so pleased for Gerry (GERard) Butler that everyone else is getting to know his remarkable work.

Ditto all of the above. The reason you didn’t recognize him is that he looks completely different in each movie.

I loved “Marek” in Timeline, watched Tomb Raider 2 and didn’t recognize “Terry Sheridan” as the same guy. I was just getting over that one, when I found out this same actor was also “Phantom,” AND did all his own singing! That blew me away.

And don’t forget “Beowulf and Grendel,” which only showed in 2 theaters in the USA I think. You can rent it.

Gerry Butler used to be the world’s most famous unknown actor. But no longer. (I think Dominic West is trying for that title now.)
